Over the past few months, watching Lanterns and anticipating each new episode has easily been the highlight of my every week. There’s only one little thing I hate about it, something completely out of the creator’s control. The internet discourse. I’ve always found myself bashing heads with fans of superhero media, but this time it feels different, more personal. For the first time in a long time, I’ve found a superhero story so brilliant that it has become one of my absolute favourite first seasons of any series I’ve seen, and yet it remains just as divisive with the fans as any DC project.
I’ve dug through the avalanche of lazy and shallow criticism, and throughout it all, there was one argument I’ve read under almost every critical comment section which I feel like I’ve hated all my life, “Lanterns is a great series but a bad Green Lantern project”. I honestly almost gagged the first time I saw this take back during the 3rd or 4th episode, mainly because in that moment it became clear that we’d be seeing this exact take over and over again ad nauseum.
